Another Ottawa-based legal firm is hoping it can capitalize on changes in the legal industry by offering advice to medium-sized companies at a lower price.<\/p>\n

Andrew Foti, the founder and CEO of Avokka LLP, said he was \u201cworking on retainer for a couple companies,\u201d when he saw an opportunity to offer medium-sized companies the same type of personalized advice an in-house lawyer would provide but on a part-time basis.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can add a lot more value as a general counsel,\u201d he said. It wasn\u2019t long before he \u201cwas very busy and I thought, can I make more of this?\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when he decided to start his new firm, Avokka, to offer what he describes as a \u201cvirtual general counsel\u201d service.<\/p>\n

The firm, which has offices in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto, launched its website in mid-February.<\/p>\n

With the recent breakup of major Canadian law firm Heenan Blaikie drawing headlines, Mr. Foti said he thinks the time is right to capitalize on the attention the legal sector is receiving.<\/p>\n

Mr. Foti said the firm plans on doing business differently than traditional firms.<\/p>\n

He said each of Avokka\u2019s lawyers will work for a small number of companies and plan to spend a lot of time working in their clients\u2019 offices and meeting with executives.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe strive to know our clients\u2019 business,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said this will give the firm\u2019s lawyers a better sense of the specific businesses\u2019 legal needs than a larger, more generalized firm.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s harder for them to help clients make risk calls,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But Mr. Foti said Avokka isn\u2019t intended to replace other firms. Instead he sees it as offering a \u201ctriage service\u201d that can direct clients to other firms when necessary.<\/p>\n

According to Mr. Foti, who was a senior vice-president and general counsel at Nordion and a partner at Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, all of Avokka\u2019s lawyers will have over 20 years of experience both as in-house corporate lawyers and with large firms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey know what quality looks like,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said Avokka offers an attractive proposition to experienced lawyers currently working for companies on a contract basis because it will make it easier for them to connect with potential clients.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re out there and they\u2019re finding us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to consolidate those people and create a new offering.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eventual goal is to take the company nationwide.<\/p>\n

Mr. Foti said Avokka, which will charge a fixed fee, will be able to offer its services at a lower rate or at least offer a more experienced lawyer for the money.<\/p>\n

He said the company keeps cost down by being no frills.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have art, we don\u2019t have management,\u201d Mr. Foti said. \u201cWe make house calls.\u201d<\/p>\n
